Your Invisalign Treatment Timeline, Stage by Stage

A walk-through of the full Invisalign timeline — from consultation and 3D scan to refinements and retainers — so you know what each stage involves.

Invisalign feels less mysterious once you can see the whole timeline laid out. Most cases follow the same arc — consultation, scan, fabrication, active wear, refinements, retainers — even when the lengths of each stage vary. This guide walks through every stage of treatment so you know what is coming, what is normal, and where to focus your energy for the smoothest possible experience.

Across all stages, the single biggest predictor of staying on schedule is wear time. Plan on roughly 22 hours per day, every day. Trays out for meals and brushing only.

Stage 1: Consultation and Records

The first visit is part conversation, part examination. Your provider listens to what you want to change about your smile, takes a clinical look at your bite and gum health, and decides whether Invisalign is the right tool for the job. Photographs, sometimes a panoramic X-ray, and a quick digital scan capture the starting point.

A short discussion about expected timeline, cost, and payment options follows. If you would like a closer look at how aligners compare with braces before committing, our Invisalign vs. traditional braces guide breaks down the daily differences.

Stage 2: 3D Digital Scan with iTero

Goopy impressions are largely a thing of the past. A digital scanner — typically an iTero wand — captures thousands of images of your teeth in a few minutes and stitches them into a precise 3D model. You will see the full scan on screen before you leave the chair, often with an animated preview showing roughly where your teeth will end up by the final tray.

The scan is shared with the Invisalign lab, where your provider uses ClinCheck software to design every tooth movement, tray by tray, in order. This planning stage is where the experience and judgment of your dentist matter most.

Stage 3: Custom Aligner Fabrication

Once the plan is approved, the lab manufactures every set of aligners for your case in advance. Manufacturing typically takes two to four weeks. During this window, nothing changes for you — daily life carries on while your trays are being printed and trimmed.

Some plans include small tooth-colored attachments bonded to specific teeth. These give the trays predictable grip points for tougher movements, like rotations and root tips. They are placed at your delivery visit and removed at the end of treatment.

Stage 4: First Tray Delivery

Your delivery visit is usually about 45 minutes. Your provider seats your first set of trays, places attachments if part of the plan, walks through the wear schedule, and hands you the next several sets of trays to take home. Expect a quick demo on inserting and removing the aligners, plus a primer on cleaning and storage.

The first 24 to 72 hours feel snug and tight. This is normal — the trays are exerting gentle pressure to start moving teeth. Mild jaw soreness during chewing fades within a few days, and most patients describe each new set as easier than the last.

Stage 5: Active Treatment

This is the long stretch. You wear each set of trays for one to two weeks, depending on your plan, then switch to the next set. Aligners come out only for meals, drinks other than water, and brushing.

Expect to:

  • Wear roughly 22 hours per day. Track wear time honestly — apps and a few simple habits make this easier than it sounds.
  • Brush before re-inserting. Trapping food or sugar against your teeth for hours invites decay.
  • Rinse your trays in cool water when you remove them, and store them in their case (not a napkin — see our aligner care guide).
  • Use the chewies or aligner trays your provider recommends for the first day of each new set to seat them fully.
  • Drink water freely with trays in. Coffee, tea, juice, and sports drinks should be enjoyed during your meal breaks.

Stage 6: Check-Ins Every 6 to 8 Weeks

Roughly every six to eight weeks, you will come in for a short check-in. Your provider compares your bite to the digital plan, confirms the trays are tracking, makes any adjustments to attachments, and hands you the next batch of aligners. These visits run 15 to 20 minutes and rarely require dilation, numbing, or downtime.

Continue your routine professional cleanings on the normal schedule throughout treatment. Aligners do not replace good hygiene, and trays seat better against clean teeth.

Stage 7: Refinements (Most Cases)

Toward the end of the original tray series, your provider evaluates how close your bite is to the planned final position. In most cases, a short additional series of "refinement" trays fine-tunes the last details — small rotations, contact tightness, midline shifts. Refinements are normal and are usually included in the original fee.

A new digital scan kicks off this stage, followed by another two to four weeks of fabrication while you continue wearing your last active set.

Refinements are not a setback. They are the difference between "almost right" and "actually finished."

Stage 8: Final Records and Attachment Removal

Once your bite matches the goal, attachments are gently polished off and a final scan captures the new alignment. Final photographs document the result. The Invisalign lab uses the final scan to fabricate retainers — typically clear ones that look similar to aligners but are made of more durable material designed to be worn for years.

Stage 9: Retainers for Life

The last stage is also the longest. Most patients wear retainers full-time for a few weeks after treatment, then transition to nightly wear long-term. Teeth always have a tendency to drift, especially in the first year, and retainers keep your investment in place. We recommend bringing retainers to your routine cleanings so we can check fit and condition at the same time.

Total Treatment Time

Adding it all together, most adult Invisalign cases run 12 to 18 months of active treatment. Simple alignment cases can wrap in six to nine months. Complex cases, especially those with significant bite work, can run 18 to 30 months. Your specific timeline becomes clear after the digital plan is reviewed at the consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does the entire Invisalign process take from consultation to final retainer?

For most adult cases, expect 12 to 18 months of active treatment, plus a couple of weeks at the start for the digital scan and tray fabrication, and a few weeks at the end for refinements and retainers. Simple cases can finish faster; complex cases can run longer.

How often do I switch to a new set of aligners?

Most plans call for switching every one to two weeks, depending on how the trays are designed for your case. Your provider sets the cadence based on the planned tooth movements. Switching too quickly can outpace what your bone biology can keep up with.

What are refinements, and will I need them?

Refinements are an additional set of aligners ordered toward the end of treatment to fine-tune the final positions. Many patients need them — they are normal, not a sign that something went wrong. They are typically included in the original treatment fee within a defined window.

Why do I have to wear retainers after treatment?

Teeth have memory and a tendency to drift, especially in the first year after braces or aligners come off. Retainers hold the new alignment in place while bone and ligaments stabilize. Most patients wear them nightly long-term, which is far less of a commitment than treatment was.

What happens at my check-in visits?

Check-ins last about 15 to 20 minutes. Your provider verifies that teeth are tracking with the digital plan, checks attachments and rubber bands, and hands you the next several sets of trays. They are quick, predictable, and a chance to flag anything that feels off.
